![]() ![]() The lagoon is located where the Martha Brae River meets the Caribbean Sea. The port is still alive to this day, but now for cruise ships instead of crops! The relatively small town is the third busiest cruise ship port in Jamaica, after Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. It’s a 45-minute drive from Montego Bay, a 1-hour drive from Ocho Rios, and a 2-hour drive from Negril.įalmouth used to be an important port town in the transport of Jamaica’s sugarcane. The Luminous Lagoon stretches from Falmouth to the small neighboring community of Rock, in the parish of Trelawny. Here’s everything you need to know if you’re planning a visit to the Luminous Lagoon. This eerie yet beautiful lagoon on Jamaica’s north coast is one of the most visited attractions on the island. The Luminous Lagoon is one of only four places in the world where you can see this happen! This phenomenon is caused by microorganisms in the water that light up when disturbed. When done swimming, you get back on the boat and they swing it in a large crescent for a sweeping trail of blue light, which would be your best picture opportunity as the light is otherwise pretty dim.Nature works in mysterious ways - ways that we can hardly believe until we see them with our own eyes.Īt the Luminous Lagoon, you can marvel at nature’s peculiar work, where the waters glow in magnificent blue-green hues at night. Apparently there are small jellyfish which can sting you-my wife and I did not get stung but a couple of other tourists did, although they said it just felt like a momentary pinprick. The lake is not deep but at 5'8" I did not feel like I could just stand up, so I would recommend wearing a provided life vest if you're worried about your swimming. You get a free small rum punch or fruit punch and then hop on a boat for a few minutes into the middle of the lake, where you can swim around and marvel at the electric blue dinoflagellates which make you feel like you're in the movie Avatar. Admission to the Lagoon is $25pp which is pricey but this is a unique experience that I think is worth paying for. I ended up doing a combined Rosehall Great House / Luminous Lagoon private driver tour w/ Jamaica Get Away Travels for $50pp x 3 ppl w/ pickup at our hotel in Montego Bay. I guess they offer $25 pickup but you have to have a minimum number of people. Transportation here is the most confusing/expensive part of the experience. ![]() Just be advised before you book this excursion that it's not all it seems. We were told there was $30 charge for the pictures if we wanted them which felt like a scam after having already paid for the frankly overpriced tickets. There was a photographer taking pictures of everyone swimming and told us he could air drop the pictures once we got back. After we were done (about 30mins) we went back to shore. It can be very off putting for people at first so beware. However, the floor feels slimy like stepping in mud mixed with slime. ![]() The water is only about 4ft deep so most people can just stand up. ![]() You actually have to get in the water and swim in order to see the glow. We went out onto the water and were given a brief explanation of what to expect. Once we got to the place we had to wait another 20mins for the boat to be "ready". Our tour was nearly 30mins late and there was no sense of urgency to make up for lost time. My GF and I were excited to go to this place because the pictures were very convincing but they don't really do it justice. I would say skip this excursion unless you are really a science nerd like we are. We had a crowd of 9 so we wanted several pictures so he finally let us get all of them( about 8 pictures for $100). You can get one picture with you in it for $25. The purchasing of pictures was a little crazy. You really wont get the effect on your camera phone. I didn't realize they were taking pictures so did not get a picture while I was in the water but after I got our I did see a guy asking people to look his way to take pictures. We stayed in the water for about 15 minutes or so. Stayed afloat and did not touch the bottom. I am not a great swimmer but asked for a life vest and I was fine. The boat kicked up water at the motor area and you could see the glow which was cool. The Captain kinda convinced them to stay. Several people were confused and wanted to leave because they were under the impression they could walk on the bottom since they could not swim well and may touch the bottom. You are not to touch the bottom of the lagoon or it would disrupt the glow effect. We boarded a boat with about 20-30 people (the boat was full) and Captain proceed to tell us if we could not swim then don't get in the water. We took a private shuttle to the location and they had a bar area you could get drinks. ![]()
